Witness Marks

(We, the Regulators series)

2022

Witness marks are the physical traces of scratches, dents and other forms of impressions in an object. When read correctly, these marks can reveal the presence of authors, and provide insights into hidden moments in time.

Obtaining one’s sense of self is a similar process, and is gradually shaped through a fusion of learned experiences. These impressions; monumental and the seemingly inconsequential, can inform a deeper understanding of ourselves and our surroundings. Reflections of one’s self identity- the interpretation of our witness marks, must also be considered alongside the notion of what marks we impress upon the people and places around us.

Witness Marks depicts an act of preservation of a piece of limestone, sourced from a place once called home. The stone is embellished with embroidery, which presents themes of cultural interpretation and human intervention. In a time where environmental conservation and land utilization struggle for balance, so too,  must we consider the roles we assume, and the driving forces of our actions.
